21 Best Things To Do In Fuerteventura In Spain
1. Climb Calderon Hondo Volcano

Calderon Hondo is one of 8 volcanos in Fuerteventura, located in Lajares.
You can start the trail to Calderon Hondo Volcano in Lajares itself, & it will take about 1 hour to reach the top of the crater.
We were driving from Corralejo, & google maps took us to a car park on the northesat side of the volcano at Camino Calderas – (HERE). From there it only took us around 15-20 minutes to reach the summit. The trails are all very clearly marked, & you’ll see people walking ahead so you won’t get lost.
TIP: Do not wear fancy shoes, vans or your newest pair of white trainers😆! The trail is quite rocky in some parts, & then parts of it are just like a dirt track. Trainers or walking shoes are your best bet.
2. Tour Around Fuerteventura’s Museums

There are 14 museums & interpretation centres dotted around the island, sharing the important history of Fuerteventura, & the best thing is – they’re absolutely free to visit.
Admittedly we have only ticked one off the list so far – the Batallas De El Cuchillete y Tamasite in Tuinieje!
On our museum bucket-list for our next visit are: Salinas Del Carmen, Majorero Cheese Museum & the Archaeological Museum to name but a few!
To more information, and to find a list of all Fuerteventura’s interesting museums, we recommend heading to their official website.
3. Spend The Afternoon In Lajares

Lajares is one of our favourite towns in Fuerteventura.
It’s not as busy as places like Corralejo or Caleta de Fuste, but that’s what we like about it.
It’s a popular spot with surfers, & you’ll find lots of cool surf boutiques here, plus lots of really cool places to eat.
The trail to Calderon Hondo Volcano also starts in Lajares, if you fancy a hike!
TIP: If you’re feeling peckish on your visit to Lajares, we recommend trying out Almirante Brunch!
4. Visit Fuerteventura’s Beautiful Churches

Most of the main towns in Fuerteventura have a church, & it’s a really nice way to embrace the religious history of the island. You’ll find that many of them are free to enter, or you can make a small donation.
A few of our favourites are Iglesia de Santa Maria in Betancuria, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora in Antigua & Church of Our Lady of La Candelaria in La Oliva.
5. Watch The Sunset At La Pared

The small village of La Pared is located on the western side of Fuerteventura.
Along with being one of the best places to surf on the island, (you’ll find a few surf schools in La Pared!), it’s also well-known for being a great place to watch the sunset.
You can watch the sunset from Viejo Reyes Beach or atop the cliffs overlooking it. Or, head over to the other side of La Pared & take a walk up to Punta Guadalupe viewpoint for even more spectacular scenes.

6. Stop Off At Fuerteventura’s Windmills

One thing you will notice dotted around Fuerteventura as you are driving about are its many windmills or ‘Molinos’.
Some are located on the fringes of small towns, others right in the centre. Many of the popular ones should show up on Google Maps!
You can also visit the Los Molinos de Tiscamanita Interpretation Centre, to find out more on the history of Fuerteventuras’ windmills.
7. Watch The Sun Come Up In Costa Calma

Costa Calma is the perfect place to watch the sunrise – our favourite beach in particular to take it all in is Playa Esmeralda.
Once you’ve watched the sun come up or taken a dip – head to Rapa Nui Cafe in the centre of Costa Calma for a morning coffee & some breakfast!
TIP: Other great places watch the sunrise in Fuerteventura are Playa Bajo Negro, Volcano Bayuyo or really anywhere along the East Coast!

8. Spend A Few Hours In Betancuria

The historical town of Betancuria is located right in the middle of Fuerteventura, & is the oldest town on the island – founded in 1404.
It used to be the capital, until 1834 when Puerto del Rosario took over the title.
It’s a charming place, with lots of history & beautiful architecture.
Be sure to check out Iglesia de Santa María & the Museo Arqueológico de Fuerteventura whilst you are there & as you drive out, stop off at the San Buenaventura Convent for a look.
Otherwise enjoy wandering around the few streets of Betancuria & grab a spot of lunch whilst you’re there!

9. Take A Seat At Mirador del Salmo

One viewpoint you don’t want to miss on your visit to Fuerteventura is Mirador del Salmo.
This viewpoint has a lovely rainbow coloured seat, which you can sit on & take in the views over Sotavento Beach & along the coast.
Note: This is quite a popular spot, so get your photo quick! You can pull in right at the bench. If you drive down to the car park on right near the abandoned hotel, & walk out the pathway to the cliff – there’s another pretty amazing spot to get photos too, overlooking Playa Los Canarios.
10. Visit The Small Village Of La Lajita

La Lajita in a cute fishing village in the south of Fuerteventura, with mostly locals living in it.
It won’t take you long to walk around, but do check out the church, beach & take a picture at the La Lajita sign!
11. Check Out Popcorn Beach

A must-see on your visit to Fuerteventura is Popcorn Beach!
Playa del Bajo de la Burra (its real name) is located in the North of the island, around 15 minutes from Corralejo by car.
The beach has become popular for its popcorn-like sand, which is actually white coral formed by algae & sand coming together!
Note: To keep the beach enjoyable for everyone for years to come, don’t be tempted to take any of the white coral pieces home with you.

12. Spend The Day In Corralejo

Corralejo is the largest resort in Fuerteventura, & undoubtedly one of the best towns to visit & stay if you want to have plenty of restaurants, bars & shops on your doorstep.
It’s a great place to spend the day or if you want, you can catch the ferry to Los Lobos Island or even over to Lanzarote.
It’s also a popular spot for water-sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing & scuba diving!

13. Enjoy Caleta De Fuste

Caleta de Fuste is a town popular with English holiday makers, due to it’s great selection of restaurants, hotels & bars. There’s also a pretty nice beach right in the middle of it!
If you take a visit here, we recommend following the promenade out along the waterfront. It’s a lovely walk & it will eventually lead to you one of Fuerteventura’s natural rock pools if you fancy a dip!
14. Watch The Sunset in El Cotillo

El Cotillo is a very popular spot in Fuerteventura to watch the sunset.
Playa El Castillo beach was our favourite spot to watch the sun go down, but you can really head to any of the beaches in El Cotillo to catch the sunset!
TIP: Other great places in Fuerteventura you can watch the sunset are – Cofete, La Pared & Ajuy – really most places on the West coast of the island.
15. Take A Drive To Pozo Negro

One thing about hiring a car in Fuerteventura is that you can visit cute spots like that of Pozo Negro.
Pozo Negro is a small fishing village located around 20 minutes south of Caleta De Fuste.
Whilst there isn’t a lot to do here, it’s a lovely place to take a wander & just enjoy some peace and quiet before you head back to some of the busier towns.
I loved the gorgeous white washed building with blue doors & shutters.
TIP: There’s two small restaurants in Pozo Negro, so you could always grab a coffee while you are there & listen to the waves!
16. Take In The Views At Mirador de Guise y Ayose

One of our favourite things about driving through Fuerteventura is that there are so many awesome viewpoints to stop your car at.
Mirador de Guise y Ayose is located on the FV-30 road leading into Betancuria, so it’s a great place to stop off on your way there.
One on side of the road, there are 2 towering bronze statues, depicting the Guise & Ayose (two aboriginal kings) & you’ll also find beautiful views towards the north.
At the other side, you’ll find another viewpoint which looks towards Betancuria & the breath-taking mountains & terrain of central Fuerteventura.
TIP: There’s a small layby at each side of the road for you to pull in to park at the viewpoint. Be sure to give notice to the car behind as you are approaching the viewpoint & be careful of other cars pulling out.
17. Walk Along The Promenade in Taralejo

Tarajalejo is a small, peaceful fishing village located near the south of Fuerteventura.
There is a lovely promenade to walk along, which has a ‘Mareseum’ (open-air museum) – constituting of around 5 beautiful sea-related sculptures including a mermaid & seahorse.
When you’ve finished your walk along the waterfront, take a short wander through the village.
18. Visit El Cotillo

El Cotillo is a beautiful coastal town in the North West of Fuerteventura – & it has got to be one of our favourite places on the island.
If you’re a beach lover, you’ll love El Cotillo. There are plenty of white sandy beaches to relax on – such as Playa de El Cotillo, Playa de Los Lagos & Playa del Castillo to name but a few.
It’s a surfer’s paradise here too, so don’t forget to bring your surf board if that’s your thing!
If you aren’t interested in the beach, you can also just take a wander around the town, checking out the old harbour, El Tostón Castle or grab a bite to eat in one of the many cafes & restaurants dotted around the town.
19. Drive to Cofete Beach

If you have a car, & you’re feeling *adventurous*, then we recommend braving the drive to Cofete Beach!
This 2km stretch of beach is absolutely breathtaking & you almost feel like you’re in a different world.
We just took a walk up & down the sand, but you could spend the day sunbathing here too. It’s recommended that you don’t swim in the sea however as the currents can be strong & there’s no lifeguard.
Don’t forget to stop off at Mirador de Cofete on your way & check out the graveyard right next to the beach.
20. Visit Punta Jandia Lighthouse

At the very south tip of the island, you’ll find the lighthouse of Punta Jandia. There is a museum inside the lighthouse, but it’s not always open!
Even though there wasn’t much to do here, it was nice to take a walk along the south coast & enjoy looking out onto the ocean.
We had a bit of a windy, foggy day for it, but we’d say the views on a clear day are spectacular, so if you’re into photography we would recommend coming here.
You can walk along & see right up the west cost towards Cofete Beach.
On your way back don’t forget to stop off at the little town of Puerto de la Cruz or check out the beach & caves at Playa de los Ojos.
There’s also another lovely viewpoint about 20 mins away called Faro Punta Pesebre which we recommend.
21. Explore The Ajuy Caves or ‘Cuevas de Ajuy’

We highly recommend visiting the little village of Ajuy & taking a walk to see the Ajuy caves.
The walk to the caves isn’t too challening & the views are fabulous.
The caves themselves are pretty unique, you can walk right down into them & explore different parts. Just make sure you are wearing suitable footwear as there might be some climbing involved!
We definitely thought it was something a bit different to do & was a really cool place to take photos for our blog!

How To Get Around Fuerteventura
If you want to explore Fuerteventura, honestly the absolute best way to get around is by hiring a car.
We normally book a car through Discover Cars as we usually find the best price on there & we find it to be trustworthy now we’ve used it a good few times.
It’s a car comparison website which basically compares all the rental car companies in Fuerteventura to find you the best deal for your trip.
We’ve booked with ‘Top Car’ (a car rental company at Fuerteventura Airport) the last few times & we’ve had a good experience each time.
The process of picking up/dropping off the car at Fuerteventura Airport is pretty straightforward too!
We really love the freedom of having the car so we can visit more places around the island at our leisure!
Read our post about renting a car in Fuerteventura for some more information!
Always do your due-diligence when booking a car, like checking out reviews for the company & double-checking all the details of your booking! Look for ones with 8* rating +!
